FINAL PROJECT : STOP MOTION

Week 1

We are briefed on our final project in class which was about stop motion. Our first task is to watch 3 stop motion videos that we found interesting or like the best and explain the reason.

1. Honda "Paper"

https://youtu.be/fLCEd8xk1BE

This stop motion video really caught my attention when I was scrolling on my laptop as the thumbnail showed that it was an ad that advertised Honda but using illustrations on papers which was very interesting. When I watch the video, I was amused by how smooth the transition was and I could see that it took lots of effort but the result was definitely amazing. I like the video because the photos were photographed well, every motion/action was captured and it felt as if the transportations were moving smoothly and consistent. In addition, I think that sound effect here is very important that it really helps to make the transportations lively as if they are producing sounds. It was really cool to see a different style of stop motion, I would say this would be my favourite one.

2. Gulp

I like the concept of this video visually and the sound effect  and music that help strengthen this video. Visually, it looks more simple and leaning towards cartoon animation style and the story line of this stop motion video is very interesting. I felt like I was immersed to the environment in the video. Overall, the flow of this video is very smooth which results to a good cartoon video.

3. Loving Vincent

I like this video because it is using numerous of paintings to create a good stop motion video. This is actually a very interesting stop motion video as it is very unique and different from most stop motion videos because they use oil panting for each frame. The flow of the video felt like somehow a short movie and everything was moving smoothly as if the paintings are alive. Overall, I found it very creative and stunning.

Final Project Idea for stop motion

Theme : I Dream a Dream

I paired up with my classmate Helen and we came up with the idea of a girl living in a doll house and doing her regular activities.

 Week 6

Pre - Production

This week we had to propose our idea to Mr Razif and Mr Martin. I paired up with my classmate Helen and we decided to come up with the idea of a girl living in a dollhouse. Here is the presentation of our idea :

FEEDBACK : Mr Razif and Mr Martin are okay with our idea and they advised us to put sound as well. The sound could be downloaded from sound.org or recorded manually as well.

Week 7 - Week 12

Production

Firstly, we took pictures and mask them in after effects using the roto brush. Then, we also made a handmade dollhouse from cartons for the house itself. We made our first trial video and showed it to the lecturers.

FEEDBACK : Mr Martin and Mr Razif said that house looks a bit empty and its better for us to put more ornaments into the dollhouse. They also suggested us to animate the ornaments to make it more interesting.

Week 13 - Week 14

We took the feedback and did lots of changes and adjustments. We tried to use lots of methods in After Effects such as sliding and wiggle effect for the ornaments. Mr Razif and Mr Martin told us to choose until it's right. They said that what we have done until now its good but its just about getting there.

After the video, we proceeded to the sound to emphasise the video. We recorded some by ourselves and also downloaded from sound.org. After that, we edited in Adobe Audition.

FEEDBACK

Week 1

Mr Martin liked my idea and after I decided to change my idea to pair up with Helen, he said that it would be more interesting to have the dollhouse idea.

Week 7

Mr Razif and Mr Martin are okay with our idea and they advised us to put sound as well. The sound could be downloaded from sound.org or recorded manually as well.

Week 8

Mr Martin said that we should do color correction because right now Helen's legs are dark and also he suggested us for Helen to wear something brighter.

Week 9

No feedback was given.

Week 10

No feedback as it was e-learning week.

Week 11

The lecturers told us to do another trial shoot.

Week 12

The lecturers commented that for the last scene they asked us to choose to loop the scene or to make the girl wake up in real life. Then, they said that they appreciate the effort to masking but it has no purpose for the green screen pictures to be stop motion, yet they suggested us to animate the objects as well. For sound, they're okay with it. Mr Martin also recommended to use motion blur effect and asked us to try various ways. In addition, they also commented how empty the dollhouse is so we should add more ornaments to make it lively.

Week 13

Mr Razif said that what we did is good but it's just about adjusting and getting there. He gave us some reference for animating the objects.

Week 14

Mr Razif gave us some suggestions to animate the objects differently but other objects, he is okay with it.
